Success for LUP Fundraiser in Aid of Local Food Charity

As part of our civic commitment to the Liverpool City Region, Liverpool University Press staff took part in a month-long fundraising effort in aid of FoodCycle Dingle, a charity designed to combat food waste, reduce loneliness and support local communities with free, healthy meals. We are delighted to announce that, through our shared efforts across the 2,409-mile charity walk and the LUP courtyard bake sale, the LUP team raised an impressive £1,715.87 for FoodCycle Dingle!

We would like to send a massive thank you to everyone who donated to the fundraiser, as well as the wider LUP team who worked so hard walking, baking, spreading the word and donating money throughout!

£20 rescues 2 tonnes of food surplus, the equivalent to 4,700 meals!

£10 provides nutritious community meals for 7 guests.

£5 fuels a warm & welcoming space for guests to enjoy their meal.

Part 1: Charity Walk: Dublin – Liverpool Kraków

The LUP Charity Walk: Dublin – Liverpool – Kraków was a collaboration between the Sustainability, Community, and EDIB Leads at LUP. The 2,409-mile ‘route’ took us from Dublin – Liverpool – Krakow – and back to Liverpool again (the locations of our remote colleagues’ home addresses.) The LUP staff walked the equivalent distance in our own neighbourhoods between 13th Jan – 10th Feb, sharing photos of our local area along the way.

Part 2: Careers & Cake in the Courtyard

For the second part of the fundraiser, we set up a ‘Careers and Cake’ afternoon hosted in the LUP courtyard. This event was designed to support students with careers advice as an informal drop-in session to buy homemade cake for charity and talk all things publishing.

We had plenty of visitors throughout the afternoon and ran out of cake to sell by 2pm!

Aligning with LUP’s commitments, FoodCycle are working in support of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by tackling food poverty, food waste, bringing communities together and supporting health and wellbeing. The work done by FoodCycle delivers against six of these SDGs, including: No Poverty, Zero Hunger, Good Health and Well-being, Reduced Inequalities, Responsible Consumption, and Production and Climate Action.

LUP was one of the first signatories of the UN Sustainable Development Goals Publishers Compact, and we recognise the responsibility of the publishing industry to create sustainable future through action. Our signing of the SDG Publishers Compact reaffirms our commitment to sustainable development, building on the progress of our internal sustainability and equity working groups and our core mission to publish and disseminate high quality scholarly research that challenges and contributes to knowledge and debates.
