Liverpool University Press celebrates 125th anniversary

October 2024 marks 125 years of Liverpool University Press and to celebrate, LUP staff hosted a party for colleagues and friends of the press at the School of the Arts Library earlier this month.

Founded in 1899 and rapidly expanding over the past two decades, Liverpool University Press has been described as ‘one of the great success stories in the difficult climate of modern academic publishing.’  LUP publishes around 200 books a year, 50 journals, and more than a dozen digital collections. This year, LUP has been celebrating by sharing blog posts, offering opportunities for Early Career Researchers, arranging giveaways, and sharing free-to-read books and journals content. The celebrations peaked at the party this month which gave staff and colleagues an opportunity to raise a glass to LUP’s last 125 years and look forward to its future.

The School of the Arts Library hosted the occasion, with local interest books, new and historic journals, and poetry collections from the multi-award-winning Pavilion Poetry imprint on display.

Professor Tim Jones, Vice-Chancellor at the University of Liverpool, giving a speech at the party.

The event included speeches from Professor Fiona Beveridge, Executive Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Humanities & Social Sciences at the University of Liverpool and Chair of LUP’s Board of Directors, LUP’s Chief Executive Officer Anthony Cond, and Professor Tim Jones, Vice-Chancellor at the University of Liverpool.

Anthony Cond, Chief Executive Officer of Liverpool University Press said:
“It takes a village to create a successful university press – dedicated staff, outstanding authors, thoughtful journal and series editors, collaborative library partners, a wise editorial advisory board and good governance.  At a time of flux for scholarly publishing, the University of Liverpool has created the conditions and the connections for its university press to thrive.”
