Liverpool University Press was greatly saddened to learn of the death of Prof. Vincent Gillespie on 13th March 2025. Vincent was Series Editor of Exeter Medieval Texts and Studies from 2002 to 2023. During that time he was instrumental in commissioning and publishing over 50 volumes for the series, first under the auspices of University of Exeter Press, and subsequently LUP, when that part of the Exeter list was acquired by LUP in 2013. His immense erudition, shrewd acumen and sage advice will be greatly missed.
Anthony Cond, Chief Executive of Liverpool University Press, said, “Vincent Gillespie was a towering figure in the study of medieval English literature, helping to shape the field over recent decades through his editorial contribution, the supervision of 40 PhDs, and of course his own research. Behind a formidable Oxford don exterior, Vincent was generous and funny. He never forgot his Liverpool roots, notably joining the campaign to save 11 of the city’s libraries from closure.”
