Celebrating 10 Years of Modern Languages Open

2024 marks the 10th anniversary of the launch of Modern Languages Open (MLO.) Since its establishment in 2014, MLO has provided a platform for the Open Access dissemination of peer-reviewed scholarship from across the modern languages to a global audience.

Marrying the editorial expertise and marketing capabilities of a publisher that has been active in the field for many decades with current digital technologies designed to facilitate pioneering Open Access content, MLO has published 281 articles, including 17 special collections over the past decade.

“A decade ago Liverpool University Press made a prediction that the future of the modern and romance languages would be interdisciplinary and it would be open access.  Thanks to the hard work of Modern Languages Open editors, authors and LUP colleagues, MLO has become a premier venue for cutting edge languages scholarship, which was accessed in more than 160 countries last year at no cost to readers.”

Anthony Cond, Chief Executive Officer of Liverpool University Press

Throughout 2024, we will therefore be celebrating the 10th anniversary of MLO with a series of special interviews with editors and key contributors from our wider scholarly publishing community shared across both Liverpool University Press and MLO.

Notes for Early Career Researchers (ECRs)*

MLO is partly supported by the Liverpool University Press Open Access Author Fund. This is used to support open access publication by early career researchers in the humanities and social sciences.

As part of this Fund, there are a small number of waivers available each year to cover publication fees for ECR authors. If you wish to apply for one of these waivers, please state this on the submission of your article and contact the relevant Section Editor to indicate your interest in an ECR waiver.
