Liverpool University Press to publish Church Archaeology from 2025

Liverpool University Press is delighted to announce the publication of Church Archaeology from 2025

Church Archaeology is the journal of the Society for Church Archaeology. Published annually since 1997, it aims to reflect the scope of current ecclesiastical archaeology in all time periods, both within the UK and abroad. This precious and often fragile legacy is increasingly under threat, and Church Archaeology aims to provide a focus for all who are interested in promoting the care, conservation and study of the ecclesiastical buildings and landscapes of Britain and Ireland.

This new partnership with Church Archaeology marks another valuable addition to the extensive collection of journals offered by Liverpool University Press, whilst also providing a scholarly reach into the wider contexts of archaeology and ecclesiastical history, crossing over into religious studies more broadly. Strengthening ties through its interdisciplinarity across various branches of scholarly research, Liverpool University Press is delighted to have the journal on board.

Clare Hooper, Director of Journals Publishing at Liverpool University Press, said:

“Liverpool University Press is delighted to begin a new publishing partnership with The Society of Church Archaeology to publish Church Archaeology from 2025. Subscribers and members of the Society will be able to access recent issues online for the first time, and we are sure that the journal will continue to be at the forefront of research into all aspects of ecclesiastical archaeology.”

Carolyn Twomey, editor of Church Archaeology said:

“Liverpool University Press is the ideal platform for Church Archaeology as it increases its circulation, and The Society for Church Archaeology is delighted to be working with LUP for the foreseeable future. Their thoughtful, speedy, and comprehensive support for the journal, especially one attached to an academic Society, has been second-to-none and we are thrilled the journal can now offer a range of Open Access publishing options for our authors, printed and digital versions for our members, and easier access to the back catalogue online.”

The first issue under the new publishing agreement will be published in Autumn 2025 and will be fully available online on the Liverpool University Press website. Online access to the archive of the journal will be made available to all subscribers. The journal will publish one issue per year.
