Underneath the titles of the first two contracted books are listed: A Degree of Modernism: The Building and Buildings of the University of Salford 1954-1976 by Simon James Hadfield and Female Offending and the Police Courts in Victorian Lancashire by Craig Stafford.

We are delighted to announce the first two monographs to be contracted from the Trailblazers initiative. Both books are a result of the innovative collaboration developed with Liverpool University Press and Lancaster University Library, the University of Salford Library and the University of Liverpool Library.

They will be published Open Access by Liverpool University Press, maximising the opportunity for impact for Early Career Researchers. The titles are:

A Degree of Modernism: The Building and Buildings of the University of Salford 1954-1976 by Simon James Hadfield

IN COLLABORATION WITH UNIVERSITY OF SALFORD LIBRARY

The book will consider the influence of modernism on higher education architecture, and how the University of Salford choose and implemented modernist architecture to represent the changing aspirations as the institution progressed toward a new university status during the 1950s and 1960s.

Female Offending and the Police Courts in Victorian Lancashire by Craig Stafford

IN COLLABORATION WITH UNIVERSITY OF LIVERPOOL LIBRARY

The book offers the first study of the relationship between women, police and magistrates in Victorian England and Wales. It focusses on female offenders and the provincial police courts, exploring how male attitudes towards femininity and respectability influenced sentencing at summary level and uses microhistories of key actors, including policemen, magistrates, and the women who used, or were prosecuted in, these courts.

Alison Welsby, Editorial Director at Liverpool University Press, remarked on the initiative in its support for ECRs: “Following a proposal submission workshop in the summer, proposal development with the authors, external peer review, understanding the importance of the author response, plus Editorial Advisory Board consideration and approval, I am delighted Craig and Simon and their exceptional work have now progressed to contract stage. Many congratulations.”

Dominic Broadhurst, Head of Content and Discovery at the University of Salford Library said: “We are really pleased to see the first Salford authored book contracted as a result of our Trailblazers collaboration. This initiative is central to our work in facilitating Open Research at the University of Salford and providing publishing opportunities for our early career researchers.”

Martin Wolf, Head of Open Research, Sydney Jones Library reflected on the success of the scheme so far. He said: “The opportunity to discuss open access for books in partnership with the Press and other universities has sparked a wide range of ideas, and it’s exciting to see not just the first chosen titles announced but to consider how the scheme will develop further.”
