Extrapolation, founded in 1959 by Thomas D. Clareson, was the first journal to publish academic work on science fiction and fantasy. Published by Liverpool University Press, it continues to be a leading, peer-reviewed, international journal in that specialized genre of popular culture. It invites applications for positions of two Co-Editors.

The journal publishes a wide variety of critical approaches including but not limited to literary criticism, utopian studies, genre criticism, feminist theory, critical race studies, queer theory, and postcolonial theory. Extrapolation promotes innovative work which considers the place of speculative texts in contemporary culture. It is interested in promoting dialogue among scholars working within a number of traditions and in encouraging the serious study of popular culture.
The current editorial team consists of five co-editors (two of whom in the process of stepping down) and a managing editor. The successful applicant will begin in July 2025.
The Job
The new Co-Editor will be expected to:
· Proactively seek journal content through commissioning.
· Act as a point of contact for intending contributors.
· Work generally with the co-editors to maintain the academic and professional standards of contributions, and to encourage healthy submission and rejection rates.
· Assist with peer review and suggest referees for submitted manuscripts.
· Line edit, copy-edit and proofread accepted articles in collaboration with the author(s) and other editors.
· Assist the co-editors and the publishers in targeting potential contributors, readers and subscribers via academic institutions, governmental and non-governmental organisations, and academic and professional communities.
· Represent the journal at conferences and other academic and professional meetings.
Who Should Apply?
The ideal candidate will:
· Be an active and engaged member of the international academic community of science fiction and fantasy studies.
· Have a good knowledge of cutting-edge research and work in the field.
· Have excellent networking skills, and extensive contacts.
· Have previous involvement with academic journals, for example, refereeing papers, guest-editing special issues, sitting on editorial boards.
· Be enthusiastic and organised, have an excellent command of English, and good attention to detail.
Whilst we would expect editors to express judgements on submissions from across genres and media, we would especially be interested in applicants whose specialisms include: global science fictions (in particular Chinese and Japanese texts); Afrofuturism, Africanfuturism and other futurisms; Indigenous speculative fiction; the Anthropocene; film; television; and comic books/graphic works.
The Co-Editor can expect to receive a modest honorarium.
The Selection Process
Applications should include the following information: name and contact details; why, in no more than 500 words, you think you can make a good co-editor; your ideas for developing the journal; other points in support of your application; a CV; names and contact details of two referees.
Applications are invited to Clare Hooper, Director of Journals Publishing at Liverpool University Press (clare.hooper@liverpool.ac.uk) as soon as possible and not later than 20th April 2025.
