We are pleased to share that 2026 marks the beginning of the Winthrop-King Institute‘s sponsorship of Francosphères as an exciting partnership that builds upon the existing commitment to furthering outstanding French scholarship to a global audience. This year will also see a new addition to the journal’s team in the form of a new co-editor, Professor Martin Munro, who will work alongside the journal’s current editor, Dr Rebekah Vince, from 2026.
Francosphères
The bilingual journal Francosphères seeks to question the presence of French language and culture across frontiers and borders, as defined by ‒ but not limited to ‒ (post)colonial encounters and decolonial perspectives. To this extent, it is a journal of transcultural and intercultural French Studies ‒ about liminal spaces and transference rather than operating within the hierarchy of ‘French’ or ‘Francophone’ culture. The journal’s overall aim is to advance a dialogue about what it means to work in ‘French’ Studies in the 21st Century.
A Leader in Global French Studies
Since its inception in 2002, Florida State University’s Winthrop-King Institute for Contemporary French and Francophone Studies has become a recognized leader in research and innovation, growing to become the premier centre of its kind in the United States and beyond.
Directed by Martin Munro, Eminent Scholar Chair and professor of French in FSU’s Department of Modern Languages and Linguistics, the Winthrop-King Institute seeks to advance knowledge of France and the French-speaking world in the United States as well as promote interdisciplinary work that encourages new understandings of France and its relationship to the world. With a focus on the contemporary, the institute aims to bring greater scholarly attention to the rich and diverse cultures of the French-speaking world.
Longstanding support of global French scholarship
The Institute’s sponsorship of the journal builds upon their existing relationship with Liverpool University Press with the joint venture of the successful World Writing in French: New Archipelagoes book series which includes several translations of leading French monographs published in association with LUP.
