The journal has a respected history and exists to promote the open and critical study of Christian faith, with a view to resourcing individuals, the churches, the academy, and institutions in support of a well-grounded liberal and critical approach to matters of faith and religion.

The appointee will need to be sympathetic to the aims of Modern Church, have a good working knowledge of the academic environment, be aware of current issues and concerns of the churches, and preferably be in active association with a Christian Church.
