Modern Languages Open: Call for Section Editors

Modern Languages Open (MLO), a peer-reviewed platform for the open access publication of research from across the modern languages to a global audience, is seeking Editors for the Hispanic Studies and Portuguese & Lusophone sections. Interested applicants have until 31st January 2024 to apply.

MLO is a platform which provides interdisciplinarity across the modern languages and engagement with other fields from a modern languages perspective. All articles are published Gold Open Access under a CC-BY licence. Its current sections are: Comparative Literature, Digital Modern Languages, Film, French & Francophone, German Studies, Hispanic Studies, Italian, Linguistics, Portuguese & Lusophone, and Russian & Eastern European Languages. Each section is headed by at least one Section Editor and has an advisory Editorial Board of academics and experts in the subject area.

Sections Editors are sought for the Hispanic Studies and Portuguese & Lusophone sections, to join the existing editorial teams. The Section Editor role primarily involves liaising with authors and peer-reviewers in order to see submissions through the editorial and peer-review process, using the submissions management platform.

The Job

The Section Editor will:

  • Work generally with the other section editors to maintain the academic and professional standards of contributions, and to encourage healthy submission rates.
  • Use the Ubiquity Press platform to manage submissions and peer review.
  • Act as a point of contact for intending contributors from their subject.
  • Assist with peer review and suggest referees for submitted manuscripts.
  • Assist the other section editors and the publishers in targeting potential contributors, readers and subscribers via academic institutions and academic and professional communities.
  • Evaluate proposals for Special Collections of articles within the section’s subject area, and provide coordination and support to guest editors of such collections.
  • Act as an advocate for MLO through the use of social media, conference attendance and professional networking.
The Selection Process

Applications should include the following information:

  • name and contact details
  • why, in no more than 500 words, you think you can make a good section editor
  • your ideas for developing MLO
  • other points in support of your application
  • a CV, with names and contact details of two referees.

Applications are invited to Clare Hooper, Director of Journals Publishing at Liverpool University Press (clare.hooper@liverpool.ac.uk) as soon as possible and not later than 31st January 2024.
