The editorial board of the Huguenot Society Journal is seeking a suitably-qualified person to undertake the role of reviews editor. The post is unpaid but offers an opportunity to develop valuable skills and connections, and to contribute to the enhancement of this publication.

The Huguenot Society Journal (previously titled the Proceedings of the Huguenot Society) has appeared annually since 1885. The primary publication of the Huguenot Society of Great Britain and Ireland, it is now published by Liverpool University Press. It sits alongside the Society’s occasional Quarto Series (edited records) and New Series volumes. It is the leading English-language forum for the dissemination of research on the Protestant refugees and migrants who left their homes in France and the Low Countries in the sixteenth, seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, and re-established themselves in Britain, Ireland, Protestant areas of Europe, America, South Africa and beyond. Each edition of the Journal carries four to eight articles, a few shorter pieces, reports on the Society’s meetings, and a substantial number of book reviews. The reviews (in English) are largely of publications in English and French, although publications in other languages, especially German, are included from time to time. We aim to improve the range of our coverage.

The reviews editor would be answerable to the editor, Dr Vivienne Larminie, and the editorial board. They would be expected to:

  • Monitor publications appearing on Huguenots, identify titles which might appropriately be reviewed for the Journal (including assessing titles advertised to the Journal and requesting review copies from publishers), and recruit suitable reviewers. The target would be a minimum of eight authored reviews per issue.
  • Arrange with publishers direct delivery to the reviewers of material (in hard copy or pdf).
  • Collate and undertake preliminary editing of the submitted reviews, according to the HSJ conventions.
  • Compile an annotated list of other ‘Books of interest’ and ‘Articles of interest’ for publication in the Reviews section of the Journal. (This is a service which is greatly valued by our readership.)
  • Deliver copy to the editor on or before the annual deadline and keep the editor updated periodically through the year.

The appointment will be for three years, with the possibility of renewal for a further specified period, subject to the approval of the editorial board.

It is essential that the candidate possesses:

  • At least a Masters degree in history, French or a closely-related branch of the humanities, with a centre of gravity in the early modern period.
  • A basic acquaintance with the period’s religious and political developments and with the diaspora of refugees and migrants.
  • A good reading knowledge of French.
  • Polished written skills in English to facilitate dealing with publishers and authors, and assessing submitted copy.
  • Experience of preparing at least one article or book for academic publication.
  • Attention to detail and awareness of the etiquette of critiquing others’ work.
  • Sensitivity to the expectations of the very varied readership of the HSJ.

It is desirable that the candidate possesses:

  • A doctorate in history or French.
  • Access to academic networks which will facilitate finding reviewers.

Applications (and any preliminary enquiries) should be addressed to Vivienne Larminie via editor@huguenotsociety.org.uk . Please include a CV, including academic qualifications and any publications, and also a brief summary of relevant skills and experience.

The closing date for applications is 19 September 2025. Applicants may be invited to a Zoom meeting with members of the editorial board at a mutually-convenient time between 23 and 26 September.

It is hoped that the successful candidate will be able to commence work as soon as possible thereafter, assisting in the preparation of the Reviews section for volume 39 of the Huguenot Society Journal (due September 2026) and taking full responsibility for the section from volume 40.
