125 years of Liverpool University Press

2024 marks the 125th anniversary of LUP’s formation in 1899. Since our very first publication, a pamphlet by J W Mackay entitled An Address to the Faculty of Arts, LUP has grown into an award-winning academic publisher, producing more than 160 books a year, over 40 journals, and a dozen digital collections. Last year we launched Liverpool Subscription Services, offering subscription management and support to fellow publishers. Liverpool University Press has a distinguished 125-year history of publishing exceptional research and going forward we continue to work at our mission of disseminating high quality scholarly research and promoting learning and culture through the publication of books and journals.

Throughout 2024, we will be celebrating LUP’s 125th anniversary with a focus on friends of LUP and our wider scholarly publishing community. We will be sharing special blog posts, opportunities for Early Career Researchers, giveaways, and the option to read a selection of our books and journals for free.

Anthony Cond, Chief Executive of Liverpool University Press, commented, ‘Since its founding in 1899, Liverpool University Press has been an embodiment of the University of Liverpool’s mission “For advancement of learning and ennoblement of life.”  Every year LUP disseminates outstanding scholarly research via books and journals, print and digital, open access and paid for content, under our own imprint and as a trusted partner, to hundreds of thousands of readers right across the globe.  In doing so we are building on the work of a vast number of people – authors, editors, publishers and advisors — who have contributed to 125 years of distinguished publishing at the Press.’
