An OA modern languages article for every day of the year: LUP Open Languages achieves open access for 2026 thanks to library support

Wide banner with a strip of overlapping academic journal covers along the top. Below, on a dark teal background, large text reads “LUP Open Languages” with an orange open access padlock icon. Smaller text underneath reads “Opening Research in Languages, Literatures and Cultures.”

Liverpool University Press is delighted to announce that LUP Open Languages has successfully met its Subscribe to Open (S2O) target for 2026. This means that all thirteen journals in the initiative will publish their 2026 content open access.

As a result, 44 journal issues—365 research articles—will be freely available worldwide in 2026, opening up access to leading scholarship in modern languages, literatures and cultures.

This achievement highlights the strength of collaborative, community-led open access models and the role they play in amplifying the global reach of modern languages research.

Advancing Cultural Understanding Through Open Access

Anthony Cond, Chief Executive Officer of Liverpool University Press, said:

“Thanks to the support of almost 500 libraries, Liverpool University Press will be able to forge a pathway to impact for hundreds of research articles in the modern languages over the next 12 months by making them available open access.

The perfect partnership of scholars, libraries and a mission-based publisher collaborating to share knowledge and promote cultural understanding.”

A Shared Achievement

The success of this initiative reflects a close collaboration between libraries, editors, authors, and Liverpool University Press.

Editors across the journals have welcomed the move to open access and its potential to broaden readership and impact:

Claire Taylor, Bulletin of Hispanic Studies:

“It is very exciting to hear that all 2026 issues of the Bulletin of Hispanic Studies will be available Open Access for everyone to read free of charge. It is a testament to the quality of the articles submitted to the journal, and the volume of interest in them. Open Access will help ensure that the journal has even greater reach.”

Denis Provencher, Contemporary French Civilization:

“We are delighted at Contemporary French Civilization (CFC) and CFC Intersections to be able to share all 2026 content with all scholars in French and Francophone studies worldwide through LUP’s Subscribe to Open Access initiative.
Subscribing institutions benefit from this by being able to continue to access all content that dates back to CFC’s appearance in 1976.”

Jennifer Rushworth, French Studies Bulletin:

“As editor of French Studies Bulletin, I am delighted that our thought-provoking articles can now reach more readers in an inclusive fashion without cost to our authors. Thank you to all our subscribers for your support and enjoy the content!”
