For the first time, a volume of Proceedings of the British Academy has transformed to Open Access, having hit the required sales threshold.
Following the start of a new partnership between the British Academy and Liverpool University Press in July 2025, a delayed Open Access initiative was announced for new volumes in the series. This builds on the approach for titles in the British Academy Monographs series, which have been fully Open Access since 2022.
You can now read Consenting Children: Autonomy, Responsibility, Well-Being, edited by Lisa Forsberg, Isra Black, and Anthony Skelton, for free, under a CC-BY-NC-ND license, on the Liverpool University Press website. The volume brings together law and philosophy to examine normative controversies concerning children’s consent.
Geetha Nair, Head of Publishing at the British Academy said:
“We are delighted to announce that, following our move to Liverpool University Press, the title Consenting Children: Autonomy, Responsibility, Well-Being edited by Lisa Forsberg, Isra Black and Anthony Skelton is now available open access, five months after its original publication.
“This marks an important milestone in our open access strategy. It reflects our commitment to a delayed open access pathway for edited volumes published since 2025, whereby titles are made freely available once a modest sales threshold has been achieved.
“We are extremely proud of our partnership with Liverpool University Press and look forward to seeing more titles in the Proceedings of the British Academy series transition to open access in the months and years ahead.”
Anthony Cond, Chief Executive of Liverpool University Press, said:
“The British Academy stands for the highest quality research in the Humanities and Social Sciences. By partnering with Liverpool University Press, a consistent innovator in open access publishing, the Academy is now able to make that research openly available through several different sustainable models. That, in turn, creates a pathway to impact for British Academy authors and an additional opportunity for advocacy in the disciplines that both the British Academy and LUP serve.”
