Liverpool University Press (LUP) is pleased to announce that it will become the new publisher of Australian Literary Studies, the fully refereed journal devoted to Australian literary criticism, as well as that which expands the scope of literary studies internationally.

Founded in 1963 by Laurie Hergehnan at the University of Tasmania, and edited from 2002–2015 by Leigh Dale at the University of Wollongong, Professor Tanya Dalziell and Associate Professor Julieanne Lamond from 2016–2025, the journal is now co-edited by Dr Meg Brayshaw, Associate Professor Brigid Magner and Professor Emily Potter.
Commenting on the enduring importance of the journal, Emeritus Professor Philip Mead, University of Western Australia and Editorial Advisor to Australian Literary Studies, said:
“The journal remains one of the primary resources for (post-nationalising) knowledge about Australian literature but it also continues to be one of the important forums in which the conversation about the history, theory and practice of literary studies, or English as it is trending back to, is conducted in this country.”
Clare Hooper, Director of Journals Publishing at Liverpool University Press, commented:
“We are thrilled to welcome Australian Literary Studies to Liverpool University Press. The journal has an outstanding reputation for publishing influential scholarship and shaping critical conversations in and beyond Australian literary studies. We look forward to working closely with the editors to build on this strong foundation and support its continued role as a vital forum for innovative research.”
The journal’s editors, Dr Meg Brayshaw, Dr Brigid Magner and Professor Emily Potter, said:
“We are so pleased to make this move to Liverpool University Press, who is so in touch with the idea of scholarly mission, and have enabled us to remain true to our purpose and long-standing identity. We welcome their support of Australian literary scholarship and look forward to a long and productive partnership together.”
